Mary Rice Special Unit
The Mary Rice Special Unit is one of the key projects under the Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi program, dedicated to supporting learners with diverse needs through holistic education and skill development. The unit focuses on nurturing learners’ abilities by combining academics, daily living skills, and vocational training, ensuring they gain confidence, independence, and practical skills for life.
Foundation Class
Learners begin here after assessment, engaging in foundational activities such as coloring, basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and other introductory learning tasks.
Sensory Class
Designed for learners who are totally dependent on the teacher, focusing on stimulation, engagement, and guided participation in activities.
Intermediate Class
Learners progress into basic reading, writing, improved ADLs, and creative tasks like coloring while building independence.
Prevocational Class
The largest and most advanced group, where learners gain practical skills in areas such as beadwork, ICT, tailoring, urban farming, hairdressing, and catering, preparing them for greater self-reliance and independence.
