Community-Driven Visibility: How Social Media Is Amplifying Women-Led Enterprise at ERCN

Through the Socio-Economic Empowerment Programme, caregivers are turning creativity into opportunity—and using digital platforms to take their products to a wider audience.
At Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi (ERCN), empowerment is not only about developing skills, but it is also about creating opportunities for individuals and communities to share their talents, build livelihoods, and connect with new markets.
As part of our Socio-Economic Empowerment (SEE) Project, caregivers and participants continue to explore creative and practical ways of generating income through activities such as knitting and crocheting.
Taking Handmade Creations Beyond the Community
During a recent knitting and crocheting session at Edmund Rice Centre Nairobi, caregiver and participant Mama Wayne used her TikTok platform to showcase and promote handmade products created by members of our women’s group.
Her initiative demonstrated how community members themselves can play an important role in creating visibility for grassroots programmes and enterprises.
Through a simple social media livestream, handmade creations that might otherwise only be seen within the local community were introduced to a much wider audience.
The Power of Digital Platforms
For grassroots women-led initiatives, social media can be a powerful tool for economic empowerment.
Platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram provide opportunities to:
- Showcase handmade products to potential customers.
- Reach audiences beyond the immediate community.
- Create awareness about women’s livelihood initiatives.
- Connect small enterprises with new markets.
- Encourage customers to support locally made products.
For participants in the Socio-Economic Empowerment Project, these opportunities can help bridge the gap between acquiring a skill and turning that skill into a sustainable source of income.
The work being done through knitting and crocheting is therefore about more than creating beautiful handmade products. It is about building confidence, encouraging entrepreneurship, strengthening livelihoods, and opening doors to new opportunities.
When the Community Becomes the Advocate
Mama Wayne’s initiative is a powerful example of community-driven visibility in action. By using her own digital platform to amplify the work of fellow participants, she demonstrated how individuals can contribute to the growth and success of grassroots initiatives.
Her support reminds us that empowerment can take many forms. Sometimes, it is about learning a new skill. Sometimes, it is about creating a product. And sometimes, it is about using your voice and your platform to help others be seen.
At ERCN, we are grateful to Mama Wayne for helping shine a light on the creativity and determination of the women involved in our Socio-Economic Empowerment Programme.
